The art: Lucas Cranach the Elder, Hunting near Hartenfels Castle, 1540.
The news: “Open Season on Spain’s King After Hunting Trip,” by Lauren Frayer on National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition.”
The art: Collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Critic’s note: The royal hunt is a traditional European subject. Painters from Cranach to Goya painted the hunt and prepared cartoons for tapestries about hunting (see the first series). This Cranach is likely the greatest hunt painting in a U.S. museum.
