John Marin, Movement in White, Umber and Cobalt Green, 1950. Collection of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City.
This week’s Modern Art Notes Podcast features American modernism historian and curator Debra Bricker Balken talking about her new exhibit, “John Marin: Modernism at Midcentury.” The show, on view now at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, examines the last 20 years of Marin’s career and places a special emphasis on his move toward oil painting. The shimmering, post-cubist picture above is one of the three or four best oils in the show.
The draft segment features curator and critic Ed Schad, who joins me for a discussion of artists whose work is on view as part of the Getty-funded series of Pacific Standard Time exhibitions and whose work deserves more sustained attention.
